Q. Why are ventilation shafts required?
A.

Ventilation shafts serve two functions for the DART Underground system:

Firstly, they allow smoke to be extracted from the tunnel in the unlikely event of a fire.

Secondly, they provide draught relief for trains as they move through the tunnels. This controls air movement within the underground stations. A ventilation shaft is required at both ends of a station and, in some cases, between stations, depending on the distance between them. In order to minimise the impact on surface features emergency entrances and exits are generally located within the ventilation shafts.
