Inchicore

Inchicore Works is the headquarters for Mechanical Engineering and Rolling Stock maintenance in Irish Rail. Established in 1844, it is the largest engineering complex of its kind in Ireland with a site area of 73 acres, situated about 3km west of Heuston Mainline Station, Dublin.

Iarnród Éireann's Mechanical Engineering department is responsible for the maintenance of rolling stock, i.e.

  • Overhaul and repair of diesel locomotives, diesel multiple units (DMU) and electric multiple units (EMU)
  • Overhaul and repair of carriages, generator vans and freight wagons
  • Manufacture of rolling stock subassemblies (CNC machining)
  • Cast iron foundry products, heavy and light metal fabrications
  • Spray painting rail and road vehicles
  • Laboratory services (chemical, oil and metallurgical analysis, NDT)
  • Draughting services (CAD INTOGRAPH)
  • Project Management, Project Engineering
  • Production planning and control
  • Safety Management

Maintenance work is carried out at Inchicore Works and in a number of depots in Dublin and throughout the country where trains are maintained to the highest standards of safety and reliability.

The mechanical engineering department is also responsible for acquiring new rolling stock as part of our Iarnród Éireann Investment Plans.

Facilities on site in Inchicore include the most modern equipment for handling the various aspects of rolling stock, including electro pneumatic lifting equipment, high tech CNC machines, under floor wheel re-profiling lathes, and paint shops. In all sections, skilled and dedicated staffs are committed to providing a range of innovative and cost-effective services to customers, the passenger and freight businesses.
